New Year’s in the Snow

Deven and I have loved camping and being in the mountains since we first started dating. We have a clear view of El Cap, the Cuyamacas and Mt Laguna from our home in Lakeside, and whenever we see thunderheads or winter weather out east, we are always itching to head out there for an adventure. We saw last week that snow was forecasted for the NYE holiday and talked about spending the night up there in a cabin but they were all booked up. Tuesday morning the storm was starting to roll in and we wanted to head up there for the snow so bad! We called the ranger station and there was one cabin open so we packed up as fast as we could and drove up to Paso Picacho campground in Cuyamaca. It rained for most of the afternoon, on and off, but come dark the rain slowly turned to sleet and then snow. These little cabins (more like sheds) are equipped with one plywood bunk bed and one wood burning stove and that’s it – but we were toasty warm once that fire got going! It dropped below 20 degrees that night and we woke up to about 3-4 inches of beautiful snow and the most serene, peaceful scene. It was gorgeous. The clouds broke and we went for a walk through the campground, in awe of the scenery change – everything was white and so beautiful. Not Colt’s first time in the snow, and he still wasn’t too thrilled. I don’t blame him, it was definitely cold for this California family! I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s Eve and Day with your loved ones – can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2015!
